A Shift Away from Civil Engineering
Though qualified in civil engineering from the Federal University of Paraná, Haroldo Jacobovicz never practised in that field professionally. His studies concluded in the mid-1980s, a period when computerisation was starting to alter business practices across industries. The prospect of working within this emerging sector proved more appealing than traditional engineering roles, setting the direction for his subsequent career.
His first attempt at company ownership came during his final university years. Alongside three fellow students with technical programming abilities, he established Microsystem to supply inventory control and cash register automation to pharmacies, supermarkets, and small retailers. The target customers were not yet prepared to adopt such systems, and the company folded within two years of opening.
Gaining Perspective Through Employment
Rather than immediately pursuing another independent venture, he sought positions within established organisations. The oil distribution company Esso, later absorbed into Exxon Mobil Corporation, recruited him from a pool exceeding two hundred applicants. Starting in sales, he progressed to analysing market conditions for the southern region before relocating to Rio de Janeiro for a commercial strategy role at national headquarters.
Economic turbulence during the Cruzado Plan’s price controls on fuel increased workplace pressures. Combined with separation from relatives in Paraná, these circumstances led to departure from Esso. He joined Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant as an advisor, gaining exposure to how state enterprises handled technology procurement amid bureaucratic requirements for classifying permanent assets.
Building Businesses in Technology Services
Knowledge gathered from multinational and public sector environments informed his return to entrepreneurship. Minauro addressed government computing needs through lease agreements featuring maintenance and scheduled equipment refreshes across four-year terms. Acquisitions of software firms Consult, Perform, and Sisteplan expanded capabilities, resulting in the e-Governe Group serving Brazilian municipalities with administrative technology.
