Richard Liu is a Chinese entrepreneur who is widely known as the founder and CEO of JD.com, one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms. Richard Liu Qiangdong was born in 1973 in Suqian, Jiangsu province, China, and grew up in a small village with his grandparents. He attended Renmin University of China and received a degree in sociology.

Richard Liu started his entrepreneurial journey by opening a retail store selling computer parts in Beijing. The store, called Jingdong, was a success, and by 2003, Qiangdong had expanded the business to 12 physical stores across China. However, in 2004, the SARS epidemic hit China, and Liu was forced to close all of his stores. It was then that Liu decided to move his business online, and in 2004, JD.com was born.

Liu was featured as an Honoree in Variety 500 entitled, “JD.com Richard Liu; Founder / Chairman / CEO”, as a result of his persistence, innovation, and hard work. During his free time, the billionaire loves to either spend time with his family or volunteering at Red Cross.

Under Liu’s leadership, JD.com has grown to become one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms, with over 370 million active users and a market value of over $100 billion. JD.com is known for its high-quality products, fast delivery, and excellent customer service, which are all key factors in its success.

In addition to his role as CEO of JD.com, Richard Liu is also known for his philanthropy. He has donated millions of dollars to various causes, including education and disaster relief efforts. Liu is also a member of the Brookings Institution’s Board of Trustees and the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management’s Advisory Board.

Liu’s success has not come without controversy. In 2018, Liu Qiangdong was arrested in the United States on suspicion of sexual assault, but he was not charged with any crime. The incident has raised concerns about the #MeToo movement in China and the country’s lack of laws protecting women from sexual harassment and assault.

Despite the controversy, Richard Liu remains a highly respected figure in the business world, known for his vision, leadership, and philanthropy. His success with JD.com has made him one of the wealthiest people in China, with a net worth of over $18 billion. Liu’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to the power of innovation, perseverance, and adaptability in the face of challenges. See related link for additional information.
