Formerly known as Alliance Defense Fund, the Alliance Defending Freedom was formed in 1994 by a group of leaders culled from local Christian communities. However, this does not mean that the group only supports the rights of Christians. In fact, the main reason for the development of the organization was to support the idea of religious rights. These are meant for all, not only for some.
Over the course of 30 years, the Alliance Defending Freedom has repeatedly demonstrated this proposition. The group has gone out of its way to defend members of some groups that rarely get a fair hearing. For example, the ADF has defended free speech for Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews, and Shia Muslims. This has led it into trouble at times.
For every action that the Alliance Defending Freedom has taken on behalf of persecuted groups, it has faced some backlash. The amount of time it has spent in court on behalf of others has been magnified. This is due to the fact that it has also had to spend plenty of time defending itself against others. The legal issues have been ongoing for years.
This does not mean that the group is ready to give up. Nor is it willing to reconsider its position. The fact that it speaks up for the right to free expression of many political and religious groups is the central tenet of its existence. Without this raison d’être, Alliance Defending Freedom would find it hard to justify its continuing existence.
With all of these facts in mind, it should be understood that the Alliance Defending Freedom plans to continue its work. The group has recently spoke out in favor of members of certain aspects of the political system in America. The work it does on behalf of these groups is further proof of its continuing relevance.
