Rachel and Andy Berliner are the founders of the company, which has an interesting origin story. During the late 1980s, Rachel was pregnant, and Andy went shopping only to discover that there were not any organic, vegetarian ready-made meals that they might like. So, they began to start making these kinds of meals for themselves.

After this, they began to come up with the idea of building their own business, and they named their baby Amy. This is where the name Amy’s Kitchen originally came from, and the first dishes they worked on were pot pies. They started out by making these by hand in their own kitchen but soon knew they would be needing more room as well as more help. A year later, they opened a full-sized kitchen and hired on 8 people to help them grow their wonderful business idea. Before they knew it, they were adding new menu items including mac & cheese and burritos and were growing rapidly.

The company has always stayed focus on supporting renewable energy and continues to do more and more to stand by their original goals. They’ve helped to build a solar farm, which powers half of their facility in Santa Rosa, California and have also been reusing water in their kitchens to save millions of gallons of water every year. They also work to keep 95% of their waste out of landfills and save large amounts of their trash for recycling and composting.

As plant-based meat alternatives continue to gain popularity, as being healthy alternatives to meat or for their energy saving potential, the company is expecting to offer novel ways to enjoy them.
