Maria Rodriguez’s investigative podcast “Border Stories” recently won a podcasting award. Behind that success is a mentorship relationship with Greg Soros, the Austin podcaster who founded Podcraft Media Lab and has helped launch numerous independent shows.
Rodriguez is one of several mentees whose work has gained traction. Some have secured major distribution deals. Three of the shows Soros mentored passed six figures in downloads within their first year. For a podcaster who set out to widen access to the medium, those results carry real weight.
A Program Built on Business Basics
Rodriguez says her mentor’s value goes beyond the studio. “He doesn’t just teach production techniques; he shares the business acumen that transforms passion projects into sustainable media ventures,” she explains.
That emphasis reflects how Greg Soros podcaster views creator development. Mentees study narrative structure, sound design, monetization strategies, and audience development. They also learn to pitch to advertisers and negotiate distribution agreements, skills that many creative programs skip. “Most mentorship programs focus on creative development, which is important but incomplete,” the podcaster says.
Soros brings two kinds of experience to the work. Greg Soros studied at Berklee College of Music, which gave him a technical foundation, and he later worked at major podcasting studios. His industry network also helps, since mentees meet potential sponsors, distributors, and collaborators through him.
Why Soros Made the Commitment
Podcraft Media Lab could have concentrated entirely on Fortune 500 clients. Instead, Soros devotes a portion of his time to mentoring creators from underrepresented communities through the Podcast Academy’s diversity fellowship program.
His reasoning starts with a diagnosis. “The podcasting industry has an accessibility problem,” Soros says. He believes his company has a responsibility to amplify voices that “haven’t traditionally had access to premium production resources.”
Other players have taken notice. Major podcast networks are watching the results, and several competitors are developing mentorship programs of their own. For Greg Soros, the trend confirms his long-term vision for the company and for the future of the medium. See related link for additional information.
