Colcom Foundation is the result of the planning of Cordelia S. May. She had an insight into the future, and its impact on the environment. Her reaction was to promote and found the foundation in 1996.

She continued to promote and fund the foundation up to and including her death in 2005. Her key quote was that society could not take for granted that it would survive the strain placed upon it by human activities.

Cordelia simply believed that the planet could not continually sustain an ever expanding population without sustaining damage beyond repair. Her belief was that the continual growth of humans at some point had to come to an end. Her financial gifts were targeted so that growth could be contained.

Colcom Foundation is the continuing gift of Cordelia S. May. It is centered on the proposition that there must be some reckoning in growth. The foundation uses the term “carrying capacity” to express the principle that there is a limit to how many people the earth can sustain. This idea contains several sub topics.

Family Planning is one. The Population Media Center focuses on education to help reduce the planet’s population. This is in keeping with the ideal of limited growth.

Another point supported by Colcom Foundation is a sensible immigration policy. The United States needs to focus on population stabilization by 2040 followed by shrinkage. That will help to minimize the effect of growth on the environment.

Clean available water is just one aspect of population growth. There is a limit to how many people can be sustained. Colcom Foundation recognizes the issue, and it is a leader in promoting population control.

The gifts of Cordelia S. May continue to last long past her death. They are outlined above. They all echo her call for a sustainable planet.
