Alliance Defending Freedom is a non-profit litigation, education, and policy organization that advocates for people’s right to live out their faith freely. This is done through direct litigation, public policy work, and education. Alliance Defending Freedom has defended America’s religious liberty for over three decades. They accomplished this through court victories in nearly 30 countries—including India, Israel, Vietnam, and Australia—and by advocating for religious freedom before Congress and state legislatures in the United States.
Formation
ADF was founded in 1987 by lawyers who recognized that religious freedom is threatened in America and abroad. Moreover, they were concerned about needing a more effective legal defense of religious liberty. The group—known by the acronym ADF—was an outgrowth of the Evangelical Legal Defense and Action Fund.
Since its founding, ADF has been led by CEO Brad Dacus, a former trial lawyer who later became a Supreme Court clerk and argued more than 60 cases before the highest courts in America, including the Supreme Court of the United States.

ADF has two objectives. The first objective is to defend religious liberty as a fundamental human right essential to a healthy society and protected for all people by the U.S. Constitution and other laws.
